What software do you use for Email?
This is relatively easy to answer, although it does partly depend on who provides your email...
If you have standard email from your ISP or telephone provider (like BT, Virgin, or TalkTalk) then I'd recommend the use of Mozilla Thunderbird, its a good free email client and has numerous add-ins to provide any extra functionality you may require.

If you happen to have an email account with Gmail (Google), Yahoo or Hotmail (Microsoft), then generally the web interface is very usable, and is definitely good to get used to if you flit between different PC's often (or want to easily access your email whilst on holiday etc.), of the three mentioned, my favourite is Gmail, particularly when you blend your own domain name with Google Apps, so that you have the benefits of your own unique domain with the robustness and great spam filtering that Gmail provides.
You can of course use Mozilla Thunderbird WITH your Gmail/Yahoo/Hotmail account too - if you do, it's best to use IMAP so that your email remains on the server and thus accessible from any PC you choose (or phone/mobile device for that matter)
